How to take care of a Persian?

Many people think that a cat needs only a plate with food, a bowl with water, a litter and five minutes of affection per day. There is the stereotype that it takes less time to take care of a cat than of a dog. Besides, a lot of people think that a cat should be left to go out whenever he wishes. It is not like this and Persians are the best example that the situation is vice-versa. Below, we would like to share with you our experience in taking care of a Persian.

We will not say too much for the moment about this delicate subject, since the opinions are splinted. Some persons are adepts of home made food; the others prefer special cat food etc. Each breeder decides himself which food is or not indicated to the cat. I would like just to give you the following advises: pay attention that the food is fresh, the feeding dishes are washed after each meal, the place where the cats are eating is cleaned as often as possible and the water is always fresh, especially if the cat eats mainly dry food.

Lets speak first about the litter tray. To be honest, from our point of view, the litter trays, which can be found in the shops, are good for Persian only as long as he is a kitten. The reason: they are too small for an adult Persian. We began also with that standard vassels and then we replaced them with plastic basins with dimension 65x45 cm. Besides, there are cats which do not use the same tray for their needs, so in order to avoid surprises, you can prepare from the beginning 2 litter trays. Concerning the "sand"; it should be of big granulation and should absorb rapidly the liquid in order to keep the cat and the house clean. You can find "sand" at different prices in the shops and some of them absorb efficiently the liquid and the reek.

There are other "methods" used by cats for their needs, but in our opinion they have several disadvantages. In the case of tray with strainer, the problem is the unpleasant smell. It is true that the cat is clean, but in case you are out for a longer time, a reek will meet you home. Besides, the cat might not use that litter until it is not cleaned. There are the same inconveniences, when the cat uses your bathtub, plus another one: the long hair cats will become spotted very quickly. Of course, we should not forget that not all the people conceive to share the bathtub with their cats.

The whetting of the claws

The cat needs to whet the claws and that is why some persons do not like to have cats in their houses. In our opinion, it is the most difficult part, when a cat appears in the house. The cat have to be taught very quickly where he can do it, otherwise your home furniture will transformed into tatters. There are 2 manners specific for the cats for whetting the claws: vertical and horizontal (I do not know the reason why). The first step is to organize the place for this procedure. There are 2 alternatives according to our opinion: to buy from pet shops ready-made product or to innovate by yourself. In case you choose the second option, you can use a carpet. No matter which alternative you choose, the most important is to place the "object" depending on the cats manner of whetting the claws and to fix it very well. Then you need patience and whenever the cat wants to whet the claws, you should put him at the special organized place for that. You can even imitate the whetting with his front paws on that spot.

If you have several cats with different manners, then we would suggest using a wooden box. You can wear it partially into carpet vertically and horizontally.

Daily Grooming

The daily grooming is very important for the Persians exterior aspect and health. First of all, the Persian has to be combed regularly, even daily if it is possible. Attention, combed, not brushed. Therefore, you can use a metal comb (would be good if you can have 2 combs with different distance between the teeth). The cat should be combed from the tail towards the head. Why is this procedure so important? If we do not comb the cat, then he will clot. The delicate and long coat can become knotty and it is possible that the only way is to use the scissors. This is only one negative part. The most important is that if the coat is not combed, then there might appear skin affections. Why should the Persian be combed, not brushed? While brushing, you gather the dead hair only from the surface of the body. The brush does not enter into the depth of the coat and does not unknot it. Using a comb, you can obtain a better result: the coat is not tangled and the body can breathe.

Secondly, you should wipe the eyes as often as possible. The Persian is having runny eyes, especially those with a high stop. Usually, the eyes are running when the cat makes an effort, for example during eating. You can wipe the eyes with cotton wool. If you do not do it regularly, then a brown liquid will appear and will form together with the coat a solid mass. Dont try to clean it as long as it is solid, because you will take out also parts from the coat. It is better to use cotton stick (like those for children)

Another aspect of the grooming, is the care of the ears. Some cats are cleaning themselves the ears and the others have no idea that they should. The ears can be cleaned with a cotton wool or cotton sticks. Please take care, the ear is a very delicate and fragile organ. Do not touch the ears part that you can not see. Clean only the exterior part.

Bathing the Persian

How often should be the Persian bathed? If you ask different persons, you might get also different opinions. We do it, in principle, once per trimester and before the exhibitions. Besides, if it happens that they are getting too dirty, they can not avoid the bathe.

First of all, you should prepare everything for bathe: several towels, combs, cotton wool, shampoo, hair dryer. It is better to use a special cats shampoo. Besides, it is good to have in the bathroom a big pail, which should be filled with water before beginning the procedure. The temperature of the cats body is higher than the human one, so the water should be warmer than for us. Otherwise, in principle, when the cat is feeling cold, he trembles.

First, using the hose, we moisten the cats coat in the washbasin. The Persian has a thick and long coat, so the water should penetrate to the roots. That is why, then we introduce the cat into a pail till the chin and try to moisten the coat as well as possible with the hands. Please take care that the water does not get into ears.

Generally, there are necessary two persons in order to bathe well an adult Persian and we would suggest not to do it alone at least the first time, until you do not know how the cat reacts during bathing.

After we have moistened the cat, we move him into the washbasin and wash it with the shampoo and then rinse it. We do this procedure twice. After we have used the shampoo for the second time, we put the cat into the bathtub, where we rinse it very well. The rinsing is very important in order to prevent skin affections, that it is why then we continue with the following: we rinse the cat several times in pail like it is described at moistening phase.

Afterwards, we go to the drying place. We wipe (not rub) a little bit the cat with a towel from the head towards the tail. We cover the cat with the towel, except the head and neck. Having the dryer in one hand and the metal comb in the other, we continue with the drying procedure. The coat is combed against the direction of the hairbreadth growing. After the head is dried, we continue with neck, back, tail, lateral parts and legs, chin, belly. Besides, the bathing is a good occasion for cleaning the ears, nose and eyes.

We hope that our experience will be helpful for you. We are waiting for you suggestions, opinions and tips regarding the grooming of the Persian.
